Description of duties, responsibilities and qualifications:
The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair beginning July 1, 2008.
Candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor who meet or exceed the department’s requirements for appointment at the rank of Full Professor will be considered. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Spanish or French, specialization open, and have native or near-native proficiency in the target language and in English. The successful candidate will have documented strengths in departmental leadership and a record of success in implementing a vision of the importance of foreign language learning. The new chair will lead the department in playing a vital role in the university's broader goal to internationalize. Within the department, the ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher/scholar committed to forging productive relationships with faculty and students from diverse languages and cultures. The position requires effective interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to impartiality, openness, and collaboration. Substantial administrative experience with complex budgets required; success with external funding preferred. Chairs at ASU customarily teach one course per semester and maintain an active program of scholarly research.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures has 16 full-time faculty and 14 adjunct instructors. The department houses 8 languages and offers an M.A., 4 undergraduate majors, and 5 undergraduate minors. The department has approximately 16 graduate students, 60 majors and over 100 minors.
Appalachian State University is a member institution of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina System.
