The A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry at Appalachian State University invites applications for a stock room and laboratory manager position.

Position description:

The stockroom and laboratory manager will supervise the daily operation of the chemical stockroom. Duties will include procurement of materials, inventory tracking, and preparation of samples, reagents and solutions in support of the chemistry department’s teaching laboratories. This person will also be responsible for training and supervision of student workers who will assist in operation of the stockroom. In this position the manager will be subject to the inherent hazards of working with numerous chemicals on a daily basis and moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds) on a limited basis. In addition to the above mentioned responsibilities, the successful candidate may have a small teaching load. This is a 12 month position; the duties will commence immediately (if feasible) or by January 1, 2009. The stockroom and laboratory manager reports to the chair of the chemistry department.

Qualifications for this position include: a Master’s degree in chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry, a minimum of 1 year experience as an academic laboratory manager or assistant lab manager preparing reagents and operating an instructional chemistry lab support facility. Training in laboratory safety (OSHA) and waste management regulations (EPA) is desired. The successful candidate must have excellent managerial, organizational and communication (written and oral) skills; should have advanced skills using Microsoft Office applications including databases; should be able to enforce safety procedures and work with a diverse group of faculty and students. The successful candidate will work closely with the departmental Chemical Safety Officer to ensure the safe operation of the stockroom.
