Description of duties, responsibilities and qualifications:
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position beginning August 2009. A strong preference will be given to candidates with expertise to contribute to our program in Actuarial Sciences although applicants in other areas are welcome to apply. Candidates with only a Master’s degree but significant actuarial experience will be considered. Otherwise, qualifications for this position include a doctorate in mathematics or a doctorate in a related discipline with appropriate experience. A strong commitment to teaching is mandatory. Responsibilities also include student advisement, curriculum development, and possible on-line instruction and/or instruction at off-campus sites, as well as an active program of scholarship and participation in service activities. It is expected that the initial appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level although an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may be made for a well-qualified candidate in Actuarial Sciences
The Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of 26 tenured or tenure track faculty as well as more than 15 full and part-time non-tenure track faculty. The department offers degrees in Actuarial Sciences; Statistics; Mathematics, Secondary Education; and Mathematics with concentrations in Business, Computation, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Statistics. In addition majors in Mathematics have the option of designing their own concentrations. The department also has two graduate programs, one leading to an MA in Mathematics Secondary Education and the other leading to an MA in Mathematics, College Teaching. The department currently has about 200 undergraduate majors and 28 graduate students. Appalachian State University is a member institution of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina. Located in Boone, North Carolina, the university has approximately 15,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields. Appalachian has both a traditional residential campus and a variety of distance education programs.
